Good News/Bad News & an injustice...

At our school in Kindergarten they have a behavior system where each child has their name printed on a clothes pin. They all start out at the beginning of the day on Good. If they misbehave their clip is moved down the chart and appropriate measures are taken.

Now Luke has never had his clip moved. He has never even been in danger of having his clip moved, however, this seems to be the center of his existence. Each and EVERY day I get a full report on who had their clip moved. This determines for Luke as to whether or not he had a good day. When his good friend Collin got his clip moved for the first time Luke reported, "Collin got his clip moved and I almost started to cry." Collin couldn't have cared less about the whole thing--but it was a BIG deal to Luke. So as each day goes:

Me: How was your day?
Luke: It was a good day! No one got their clip moved!

OR: It was a bad day. Haleigh, and Collin and...got their clips moved.

Today went like this:

Luke: I've got some good news and some bad news.
Me: What's the good news?
Luke: The good news is I didn't get my clip moved.
Me: GREAT! What's the bad news?
Luke: Evan got his clip moved TWO times!!

Must have been some day!

The injustice of the day comes from Rachel. Of course. She came into the room and proceeded to rant and rave...

"All everybody ever talks about is the Revolutionary War! No one ever talks about the Civil War. I mean the Revolutionary War is important and all, but the Civil War was important too!..."

I wasn't quite sure what to say. How do you validate your daughter's passion for one war without diminishing the impact of another war on the very framework of our nation?

I just had to laugh.
